Popular HDD Rock Reamer / Hole Opener Sizes and Configurations

When reaming rock, we recommend opening the hole in multiple passes. We can build your Hole Opener to cut from the reamer shaft all the way to the O.D., but it is often more efficient to enlarge the hole in 4”-8” increments with multiple passes. Example: (18” final hole size) 5”-6” Pilot Hole, followed by a 10” Hole Opener, a 14” Hole Opener and an 18” Hole Opener. In softer rock conditions or with larger drills, it may be possible to step from 5”-6” Pilot Hole, to a 12” Hole Opener and then an 18” Hole Opener. Conditions may sometimes allow going directly from the 5”-6” Pilot Hole, directly to an 18” Hole Opener but this is often slower and may not be possible with smaller drills. 4”-8” staged passes is recommended for efficiency and longer tools life.Contact_Us.html
